If you have noticed an uptick in tow trucks late at night, you are not alone.

According to MotorBiscuit, the American auto loan market is facing severe pressure, triggering a sharp rise in vehicle repossessions.

Rising Debt and Heavy Payments

Legal analysts at Snell & Wilmer report that total outstanding U.S. auto loan debt has reached a staggering $1.67 trillion.

Monthly car payments are stretching household budgets tighter than ever before.

Data from Edmunds shows the average monthly payment for a new financed vehicle reached a record high of $773 in early 2026.

Meanwhile, Experian found that average used car payments climbed to $531 per month.

The Negative Equity Trap

Many drivers are stuck owing more money on their vehicles than the cars are actually worth.

Edmunds reports that the average negative equity rolled into new car loans hit a record $6,884 in mid-2026.

This pattern locks buyers into a difficult cycle of high monthly expenses that can eventually lead to default.

In fact, financial analytics firm Prodigal noted that 2.2 million vehicles were repossessed across the U.S. in 2025 alone.

A Potential Silver Lining for Buyers

While these circumstances are incredibly difficult for defaulting owners, the shifting market offers a glimmer of hope if you are looking for a car.

As lenders liquidate seized inventory, dealership backlots and auction houses are seeing a surge in available vehicles that could help cool down inflated pre-owned prices.
